How Staying Safe from COVID-19 Is Similar to Living with Food Allergies

Hi everyone! I hope you all are well!

For this month’s blog post, I thought I would write about a connection that hopefully many people will make: how staying safe from COVID-19 is similar to living with food allergies.

This might sound weird at first, but there are many similarities between the two. The world doesn’t know it, but how everyone is having to act now is how food allergic people have to act all the time.

Now more than ever, people are washing their hands before every meal and many times throughout the day in case they have germs. For the food allergic, we have been doing this for as long as we have had our food allergies, and for me that is my whole life! We have to wipe down surfaces before we sit down or use a table in case there is food residue on them and we keep our hands off of our faces at all times in case they have our allergen on them.

Another similarity is how right now, we have to assume that everything we touch is dirty with germs. For the food allergic, we have to assume that everything we touch has our allergen or food residue on it.

Just like social distancing and staying away from sick people right now, the food allergic always have to be aware of their surroundings. If there is someone eating their allergen close by, they may have to move away in case it were to spill on them or get too close. If someone is making food that is steaming with our allergen in it, we have to move to a different room or away because that can also cause an allergic reaction.

All of this can definitely become tiring at times. But, the whole world has to do it right now to stay safe. So, for the moment, we are all in the same boat. And who knows, maybe after this is all done, the world will be a cleaner place for all of us!
